DJ Hero Review

DJ Hero will be the next hot music video game to hit the market. Similar to Guitar Hero, DJ Hero by Activision is designed to simulate club mixmasters on the “ones and twos” – but in your own living room!

If you’ve played Guitar Hero, you’ll recognize the use of colored buttons, and markers on the screen, as you press buttons to mix and scratch in time with them. The set list is made up of over 100 songs, which create more than 80 two-song DJ mixes. With songs from Beastie Boys, Marvin Gaye, N.E.R.D, Black Eyed Peas and 50 Cent, these mixes are creative mashups of genres, including electronica, Motown, hip-hop, rock, and R&B.

The game’s turntable controller allows players to cross-fade, match beats, and scratch their own custom mixes. One half of the controller features three color-coded buttons used to direct a fully rotating turntable. The other half of the controller contains a fader for mixing, switching between the tracks, and creating additional effects. If you are new to music video games, it may take you a while to get the learning curve, but with the large variety of songs that are available, you will not get bored!

DJ Hero also features the likenesses of legendary mixologists Grandmaster Flash, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ AM and Cut Chemist. The electronic duo Daft Punk will also make their video game debut, and they have created two exclusive “Megamixes” for the video game.

Cool video game options include the ability to play online, as well as local multiplayer. An added dimension is the option of a turntable vs guitar battle, which should lead to some interesting battles between you and your friends!

October 26, 2009 – For many, exactly what a DJ does up in that DJ booth at the club is a mystery. But now you can find out with DJ Hero, the latest in the never-ending line of Hero games from Activision. Because this is a new type of music game, there’s a lot to explain, but let’s get this out of the way first: DJ Hero is fantastic. It’s one of the best games I’ve played this year and one of the best music games I’ve ever played. Hopefully you’ve saved space for one more plastic instrument in your living room, because you’re gonna’ want to have DJ Hero on hand for your next party.

DJ Hero goes back to the simpler times of music games before there were world tours and fans to earn. You work through tiers of songs and unlock new mixes, characters, and costumes by earning stars — but that’s pretty much all you have to worry about. This simple design puts the focus on the music, which is excellent. DJ Hero has one of the best and certainly most diverse track lists of any music game. Unless you listen to country music exclusively, you will find songs here you love.
